I am only sleeping 2-4 hours a night. I can’t go to sleep until sometimes 4 or 5 am and am awake by 8am, this has been happening for the last 5 nights, I figure I’ve had under 18 hours of sleep since last Thursday, one night not sleeping at all.. What am I to do?

ask a doctor to recommend a pill that will help you sleep, but if you feel healthy and you’re not tired then it is fine to only sleep that much. some people don’t need as much sleep as others so just sleep how much you need to feel good :]

the ‘official’ recommendation is that people need 8-8.5 hours of sleep to function properly. If you are a university student like me, you routinely get much less out of necessity. However, if you are trying to sleep and can’t I would see a doctor. Often happens if you are under lots of stress.

I’ll list a handful for you, and if you want more you’ll have to read some of the articles I wrote on my blog (you gotta meet me half way don’t you).

    1. Find and start chewing Valerian root. It stinks and its hard to find, but it relieves stress which is the primary cause of the vast majority of peoples incomnia

    2. Melatonin tablets. This is a hormone produced naturally in your body. Your body makes more of it the more darkness you get. Light basically, kills the melatonin in your body. If you don’t want ot buy the pills (although you could because they’re nautral and relatively cheap $8 a bottle of 40).

    3. Meditation. If you seriously have bad insomnia you will try this. It can be good for you in so many ways, but at the very least, 15-30 minutes of meditation before you want ot go to sleep will help to put you to sleep.

    4. Keep consistent sleep schedules. Your body doesn’t sleep on demand. You need to get used to a cetain time at night when you sleep.

5 Don’t eat 4 hours before bed time

    6. Chamomile tea…

I could go on. There are like 100 more. I just don’t have time to write them all out for you. Here’s a link for more:

Hope they help! I’ve been in your situation before. I know how painful it is.

The amount of time people sleep a night varies from about 1 hour a night (yes some people only need that) to 10 or more hours a night. Most people need 6-8 hours of sleep a night. There is no exact answer. It varies greatly depending on the individual.

You could die of insomnia/sleep deprivation. That’s a simple fact, not a threat or a scare tactic. Sleep is like food. It takes about… I think about 7 days of no sleep at all, but eventually you could loose functionality and die.
